Winnipeg is the capital city of of Manitoba. It is the largest city in Manitoba with a population of 705,244 (2016 census) and is the 8th largest city in Canada.
The name Winnipeg comes from Lake Winnipeg which is combination of 2 Cree words “Win” which means muddy and “Nippee” which means water. Winnipeg is has 2 large rivers that flow through it and converge at a National Historical Site of Canada aptly named “the forks”. This site has been historically important for meeting and trade for close to 6000 years. First nations, Europeans, Metis, Scottish and many other workers and immigrants used this site to meet, and trade, and perform various activities.
The first major settlement was by Scottish farmers in 1812 which then became a trading post for the Hudsons Bay company in 1870, which is still a department store today more commonly known as The Bay. In 1873 Winnipeg qualified as a city with a population of 1,870. Winnipeg then saw a great boost to the economy and population when the Canadian Pacific Railway arrived in 1885.
